Campion at 50

2017-18 is a special year for Campion as we celebrate 50 years since the opening of the school in 1967 under the leadership of the first headteacher, Derek Roberts.  From the determined commitment of Mr Roberts to comprehensive education, Campion has evolved into a school community which retains at its heart the values upon which the school was founded - academic success for all, giving and receiving, and participation.

The first of our birthday celebrations was held on Saturday 9th September.  Hundreds and hundreds of people with links to the Campion community joined together to mark this special date in the history of the school.  Some people enjoyed a game of netball, others a ballroom dance, more than 150 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea and in the evening 200 people enjoyed our dinner dance.

Our HandS parent team organised an excellent fete and refreshments; we are grateful to all students, parents and staff who helped run various stalls.

The feedback received from all who shared in the day has been tremendous.  Many people commented on the significant site developments which have taken place since they were students at Campion and were impressed as they toured the school by the high quality facilities, appearance and cleanliness of the site – no mean feat when some buildings are 50 years old!

It was good to welcome retired headteachers, Mr Tim Bartlett and Mr Tony Downing, back to Campion.  Mr Derek Roberts, the first Headteacher of Campion School had also hoped to join us but unfortunately was unable to do so.  In his absence a wonderful letter was shared at the afternoon and evening celebrations and I leave the final word to Mr Roberts who said “As a lover of cricket,  I am very pleased to have witnessed Campion School  achieve its half century and will continue to cheer from the sidelines as it stays at the crease and continues to bat on towards its full century.  I do not doubt Campion’s staying power or desire for success. And I am sure that the great and extensive community of Campion will guard it well and ensure it thrives”.

John Perkins has been busy compiling a book full of photos and the history of the first 50 years of Campion.  This will be available for sale soon.

Please look out for special souvenir pens and pin badges on sale from school and various village outlets now.
